Financial Management in the Sports Industry
The financial landscape in sport is unique. Earnings can vary significantly over time, and income often comes from multiple sources including salaries, bonuses, sponsorships, and commercial deals.
This creates a need for structured financial planning, accurate reporting, and proactive tax management. Without the right support, it’s easy to lose visibility over income, overspend, or face unexpected tax liabilities.
Working with experienced sports accountants ensures your finances are properly managed, your income is structured efficiently, and your long-term financial future is protected.

frequently asked questions
Is purse money, prize money and win bonuses taxable?
Yes. Purse payments, prize money and win bonuses are trading income for a professional boxer, taxable in full less allowable expenses. The complication is timing: a single large purse can push a year’s income into the highest band while the following year is quiet. Planning around timing, pension contributions and expense recognition across an unpredictable earnings pattern is where most of the value sits. Send us your fight schedule and we’ll model the tax position across the whole cycle rather than one year at a time.
How do I plan financially for a short career?
A short earning career means the peak years have to fund the decades after them, so the useful question is not what you earned but what the money is worth after tax and what it has to last. As chartered accountants we handle the tax side of that: how income is timed and structured, which allowances are worth using while profits allow it and what a large purse or contract leaves you with. Where the answer needs regulated advice on pensions, investments or protection, we’ll tell you and work alongside an authorised adviser rather than guess. Book a consultation while you’re earning, not after you’ve stopped. This is general information, not personal financial advice.
Do I pay UK tax if I train or compete abroad?
It depends on your UK residence status, which is determined by the Statutory Residence Test rather than by how many days you feel you’ve been away. UK residents are generally taxable on worldwide income with treaty relief for foreign tax; non-residents on UK-source income only. Training camps, fight schedules and family ties all feed into it, so the position is worth establishing before the camp is booked rather than guessed at afterwards.
How is image rights income taxed?
Image rights payments are taxed on their substance, not their label. Where real, separately negotiated commercial rights are being exploited, income may properly sit with a company holding those rights. Where an arrangement simply relabels performance income to reduce tax, HMRC will challenge it and has done so successfully. If you have an image rights company — or someone has suggested you set one up — let us review the arrangement before HMRC does.
Will you work with my agent and management team?
Yes — we believe the best outcomes come from collaboration and we deal with your representatives directly on your written authority. We also work under strict confidentiality and don’t discuss or publicise who we act for without consent.
What expenses can a professional athlete claim?
An athlete can generally claim coaching and training costs, gym and facility fees, sports-specific equipment, medical and physiotherapy treatment related to performance, travel to training and competition, management and agent commission, plus professional fees. Sponsorship obligations can also affect what’s allowed. Most athletes underclaim because nobody kept records during camp.
